Apple hasn’t released a new iPad since fall 2022, leaving many fans waiting patiently contrary to its new release of M3 MacBook Air. However, the wait appears to be nearing its end.

Apple recently sent out invites for a virtual event on May 7th, titled “Let Loose.” The invite prominently features an Apple Pencil, hinting at a focus on iPads at the event.

Let’s see what we can expect from Apple’s upcoming iPad showcase.

Focus on iPad Air and iPad Pro

While Apple may make other announcements, rumors suggest the spotlight will be on the iPad Air and iPad Pro lines. These are typically Apple’s higher-end iPads, currently starting at a price point of $670 (USD) when considering storage upgrades and accessories.

There’s also speculation that the new models might be even more expensive due to potential upgrades.

iPad Pro: A Display and Performance Boost

The rumors surrounding the iPad Pro are particularly exciting. The biggest upgrade could be a switch to an OLED display. This technology offers superior contrast, deeper blacks, and potentially better HDR compared to the current iPad Pro’s LCD screens.

Additionally, the new iPad Pro is expected to feature the latest M3 processor, likely similar to what’s found in Apple’s recent MacBook lineup. This should translate to a significant performance improvement.

One practical upgrade many users would appreciate is a change in camera placement. Currently, the iPad Air and iPad Pro cameras are positioned on the short edge, resulting in awkward video call angles when using the iPad in landscape mode with a keyboard attached.

Hopefully, Apple will address this by relocating the camera to the long edge, similar to the 10th generation iPad.

New Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard on the Horizon?

The Apple Pencil in the event invite hints at a potential refresh for this popular stylus. Rumors suggest it may come with new input functionalities or be compatible with Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset, codenamed Vision Pro.

While this Vision Pro integration might be a long shot, it’s certainly an intriguing possibility. It’s also worth noting that a new Magic Keyboard could be unveiled alongside the new iPads.

iPad Air Gets Bigger (Maybe)

The iPad Air might also see some exciting changes. Rumors suggest a potential larger size option, possibly a 12.9-inch model mirroring the iPad Pro’s display size. This larger iPad Air could also inherit the mini-LED display technology found in the 2022 iPad Pro, offering improved brightness and contrast.

While the potential OLED displays, M3 processors, and camera placement changes are enticing, keep in mind that these upgrades might come at a premium price. We’ll have to wait for the official announcement to learn more about the details and pricing of these upcoming iPads.
